The Rosie Academy: Leather Care 101

Why Is R. Riveter Leather Superior?

The vegetable tanned leather that we use is unsurpassed as some of the highest quality material on the market. Proving to be far more natural and durable than synthetic or bonded leather, veg tan will patina and start to tell the story of your journey together. The color will evolve over time and begin to take on a character as unique as the person carrying it and as authentic as the military spouses that helped create it.

We love using real veg tanned leather in our handbags because they just better with age.  If you happen to get scratches or water marks, you can usually get the bag looking new again with just a little maintenance.

Care Instructions for R. Riveter Leather:

  1. When cleaning the leather, especially the first time, use a white rag that you don't mind getting soiled.
  2. We suggest using mink oil, or if the leather is very soiled, a saddle soap. When using mink oil, or saddle soap, or even just a damp rag, please be aware that the leather will darken, and should be prepared to apply the cleaner to all the leather to make it even.
  3. Occasionally leather dye comes off on real veg tanned leather. This usually only happens the first time and is perfectly acceptable to happen while properly maintaining a real veg tanned leather purse.
  4. Saddle soap can be applied with a sponge to clean heavy areas on the leather as well as to buff out scratches.
  5. Whenever cleaning is being done the top finish is being removed and a new layer of finish should always be applied afterwards.
  6. When veg tanned leather is freshly dyed it is at its most rigid state. There is no way to mimic this natural process, but you can expedite it by applying any leather oil; we suggest a mink oil.
