Ida Cook

Ida Cook (1904–1986) was a British romance novelist who wrote 112 books during her lifetime. Yes, 112. Most of us can't finish a to-do list. But here's where it gets really good — Ida used the money from her writing to help smuggle 29 Jewish people out of Nazi Germany during WWII. Just casually saving lives between chapters.

The cover story? Opera. Ida and her sister Mary Louise were devoted opera fans — and they used that completely believable, completely innocent hobby as their reason to fly into Germany. Repeatedly. During wartime. While arranging safe passage for refugees and smuggling out valuables sewn into their clothing to help people start new lives.

To be clear: two English ladies, armed with opera programs and absolute iron nerve, walked in and out of Nazi Germany like it was a weekend trip to the countryside. If that doesn't make you feel like you can handle your inbox, nothing will.
