Meet Betsy Ross (1752ā1836) ā American Patriot, flag maker, and a symbol of female ingenuity for centuries. At just 24 years old, Betsy was already running her own upholstery business in colonial Philadelphia, because apparently some women don't wait until they "figure things out." During the American Revolution, she was quietly holding the whole operation together ā constructing uniforms, tents, and flags for the Continental Army while everyone else was just trying to survive.
Then General Washington himself came knocking in 1776 to commission a new flag. Betsy delivered ā and in doing so, sealed her page in the American history books permanently. She is strong, practical, and the kind of team player who absolutely knows her worth. Which brings us to the best part.
Washington originally asked for a six-pointed star. Betsy Ross looked at it, looked at him, and said ā in the most polite colonial way possible ā actually, five points is better, and I'll show you why. She folded the fabric and cut a perfect five-pointed star in one snip. Washington changed the flag. America has had 50 of them ever since.
