Join us in honoring law enforcement’s hard work, dedication, and sacrifice on this year’s National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day! We are grateful for your commitment and all that you do.

The origins of law enforcement

Until the mid-1800s, law enforcement in the United States was mostly carried out by sheriffs and groups of volunteers and deputies. Most areas did not consider an established network of emergency responders like firefighters and police officers to be a necessary part of the community.

In 1844, New York City established the first municipal police department. And in 1953, Cincinnati created the first fully professional municipal fire department. By the 20th century, most larger cities, counties, and states had centralized law enforcement entities.

Establishing National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

In 2015, Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) – an organization that supports loved ones and family members of police officers who lose their lives in the line of duty – took the lead to establish the first National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

The annual event recognizes the dedication of law enforcement and the sacrifices they make every day to keep our communities safe. Every day, law enforcement officers run toward danger and make difficult choices to ensure public safety.

January 9 is the perfect time to express gratitude for your local law enforcement departments and those who serve on a state or national level. Consider thanking a local officer, expressing your gratitude on social media or by writing letter, or donating to organizations like C.O.P.S.

New R.Riveter totes honor police officers and firefighters

This January, we’re launching two limited-edition Margot totes as the perfect way to honor our law enforcement officers every time you carry your new bag.

The navy canvas Margot tote features an American flag emblem with one blue stripe in honor of police officers everywhere. And the black canvas version includes an American flag with a red stripe dedicated to our firefighters.

These 100% cotton duck canvas totes provide structure for your everyday adventures and plenty of space for everything you carry with you.

Show your support for law enforcement with new stone bracelets

Looking for another way to honor law enforcement? We’re also launching two new stone bracelets.

Our new bracelets both feature white howlite and black lava stone with blue lapis stones on our L.E.O. bracelet and red agate stones on our Fire Fighter bracelet. Our carefully curated signature look includes a brass charm inspired by military dog tags, each stamped with the maker’s RR number.
