Honoring the Purple Heart

Every August, we pay tribute to the courageous individuals who have suffered injuries or made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation.

In 2014, August 7th was designated as Purple Heart Day, commemorating those who gave their all in unwavering dedication to our country.
This year, we’re introducing two new accessories in honor of Purple Heart Day. We love being able to honor these courageous individuals every day when we carry our R.Riveter bags.
We’re donating 10% of net sales of this Special Edition Otto to Warriors and Quiet Waters in honor of Purple Heart Day. This incredible organization gives service members who have experienced PTSD a chance to find healing through their therapeutic programs.

The Origin of the Purple Heart

The first Purple Hearts were awarded in 1782 by General George Washington. Initially known as a Badge of Military Merit, the award was given to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action.”

While this initial designation faded out of tradition in the armed forces, it was revived and relaunched in 1932 as the Purple Heart to honor the bicentennial of George Washington’s birthday. General Douglas MacArthur received the first modern Purple Heart for his service during World War II.

The color purple is traditionally viewed as a representation of the bravery of those who serve. The original Badge of Military Merits was purple in color, and the modern Purple Heart honors George Washington’s memory by continuing his chosen hue.

The 2023 Purple Heart Collection
We are welcoming two new Purple Heart-inspired accessories this August.
The new Otto Carry-All in Violet Rosie Bandana print is the perfect commuter bag. Our most popular and iconic bag now comes in a floral print inspired by Rosie the Riveter’s bandana pattern. The duck cotton is water resistant, and the deep brown leather adds a long-lasting touch of luxury.

And say hello to the new Mini Lucy Zipper Pouch in Violet Rosie Bandana print. The Pouch zips shut and keeps all your small tech items and cosmetics organized. This pouch may be small but it is still a mighty reminder of the great sacrifices that Purple Heart recipients have made.

Join Us in Honoring Purple Heart Recipients

With every R. Riveter purchase, you support military spouses and families. Each R. Riveter accessory journeys across the fifty states before arriving on your doorstep. Military spouses across the nation craft individual components and ship them to our Fabshop. Our in-house team then assembles each piece into a one-of-a-kind product crafted with love, honor, and pride in our country.

Please join us in remembering, honoring, and thanking each Purple Heart recipient for their bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to our country!
