Carrying a Legacy: An Heirloom Story

May is Military Appreciation Month, and we at R. Riveter are proud to share the stories of our Nation's heroes. This story was submitted by Justine McClure, R. Riveter's very own Customer Experience Manager, military spouse, and R. Riveter Heirloom customer.

Why did you decide to create an Heirloom bag?

My sister and I decided to have Heirloom bags made from our father's uniform for us, and my niece and nephew. Our dad passed away 10 years ago when he was 64. He was always so supportive and loving to us, we still miss him terribly, and we wanted a way to carry a piece of him with us.

Can you tell us a little about your experience working with the R. Riveter team to create your bag?

I am a little biased since I work for R.Riveter. This process was great, and it was a blessing to be able to speak with the head of our Heirloom Team directly about our bags. She truly cared about making these bags perfect for us. I am the customer experience manager, and I communicate directly with the Heirloom Team and our customers to make sure we get these bags right for each person. The Heirloom team cares as much as I do about our customers and making sure these bags are done correctly. I want our customers to know that I personally know what these bags mean to them. Both of my grandfathers were in the military and fought on D-Day. Our dad was not able to join the military due to health issues, but service in the best way he could. My husband is active duty.

What does your Heirloom bag mean to you?

It is like having a hug from my dad, even though he is gone. It is a reminder of how much he loved us, and that he is still watching over us, even though he is gone.

What is the story behind the materials you sent in?

We sent in our dad's jumper and some of his patches. He was a firefighter/paramedic/EMT.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your Heirloom journey?

Honestly, it is hard for me to talk about this without getting emotional. It is unbelievably hard to lose a loved one. Being a part of R.Riveter, and having this service we can offer to people is something I am incredible proud of and honored to be a part of. I get to talk to our customers about their materials, and their loved ones, and this is something that other companies do not offer. I struggle to find the words to express how much the bags my sister and I had made mean to us. And to be a part of our customers' stories, and help them through this journey,  it is truly an incredible honor that I am so thankful to be a part of!
