The bomber jacket’s iconic history

The first traditional bomber jackets were created in 1917 by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board. Made out of necessity, these fur-lined, leather jackets kept pilots warm in the bitter cold of open-air fighter planes in World War I. For the next few decades, these jackets underwent design changes and material shifts that kept up with changing aviation designs and combat and training needs.

After years of using leather and sheepskin material for military pilot bomber jackets, the iconic MA-1 jacket entered the scene. Featuring a knit collar and easy-to-clean nylon material, the MA-1 kept pilots warm and dry in the now-closed-in cockpits. Although originally made of navy blue nylon, the design switched to an olive color for camouflage purposes.

The MA-1 was eventually retired from military dress and replaced by updated and modernized models, but it remains the inspiration for bomber jackets in mainstream style. The bomber jacket rose in popularity in the civilian fashion world in the 70s, 80s, and 90s – solidified by actors in movies like The Hunter with Steve McQueen and Top Gun with Tom Cruise.

Bomber jackets live on as practical military uniforms and through creative iterations in the fashion industry, and now their inspiration has landed at R. Riveter. Shop our new nylon R. Riveter creations this fall and sport our version of the bomber jacket.
