What is National Poppy Day?
THE AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY NATIONAL POPPY DAY®
In the wake of destruction left behind by WWI in Europe – the poppy began to flourish in the war torn Flanders Field. Thought to be because of the lime enriched soil – the changing chemical make-up of the earth gave way to a striking sea of red poppies that endured, even to this day, as a symbol for memorializing the loss of many during war time.
What started as a poem in 1915 - has grown into a nationwide tradition to remember the sacrifices of those we have lost and honor the hope for which they did so.
EVERYONE CAN HELP
Anyone can participate in National Poppy Day®. Here are a few simple ways:-Wear a red poppy all day and tell everyone why (this special edition Otto is a perfect way to carry the tradition).
-Distribute poppies to friends, co-workers and family and tell everyone why.
-Collect donations at your workplace to give to the Poppy Program. CLICK TO BUY A COLLECTION CAN from the ALA
-Tell the story on Facebook of who you are wearing your poppy to remember or support on National Poppy Day®. Don’t forget to tag us! #PoppyDay #LegionFamily #BagsOnAMission
IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders Fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved, and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.John McCrae
