Inspiration Behind the Name
The Mattie honors Margaret “Mattie” E. Knight, the most famous woman inventor from the 19th century. Born in 1838 in York, Maine, Mattie preferred to play with woodworking tools over dolls, and at the age of 12 invented a safety device for mechanical looms that was adopted by area mills.
Mattie is most known for inventing the machine that created flat-bottomed paper bags by gluing paper together. A man stole her design and patented it first, and when she took him to court, he stated that “she could not possibly understand the mechanical complexities of the machine.” Mattie responded with blueprints, journals, models, and eyewitnesses - and came out victorious!
The Mattie Satchel celebrates Mattie’s ingenuity and her dedication to her craft despite cultural norms at the time.
Canvas Care Suggestions:
When spot cleaning the canvas, we suggest using a brush or sponge with water only to wipe it off soiled area. We do not recommend using anything other than water as it could discolor canvas material.
